Maintenance Shift Supervisor

Starting salary range: $34,000 - $48,000

Salary range in 10 years: $45,000 - $72,000

Degree/training/certificate required: B.S. in mechanical or electrical engineering, or, with steel industry experience, a two-year degree in technology, electrical, mechanical, metallurgical, etc.

Maintenance shift supervisors are team leaders as well as technical experts. They must possess strong communications, leadership and presentation skills. And they must be able to work quickly under pressure, diagnosing problems and coming up with solutions.

Maintenance shift supervisors oversee a crew of electrical and/or mechanical repairmen. They are responsible for keeping operating units up and running. They perform both preventive and breakdown maintenance. Troubleshooting is a big part of their job.

An engineer with a four-year degree could begin in this position. Those with less formal education could work their way up to this position.
